unchanged🔥 Trump’s death wish? Why he is pushing uncontrolled AI despite risks of catastrophe and security chaos 👉American AI engineers are increasingly freaking out over fears that cutting-edge models could spiral out of control. 🔴 Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon has resigned, warning that AI firms "are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives." He likened the rise of AI to the US Manhattan Project. 🔴 Anthropic top scientist Evan Hubinger confirmed that AI researchers "earnestly believe" that AI could destroy humanity. In July, roughly 1,400 AI industry employees and researchers urged the US government to rein in big tech and help slow the pace of AI development. More signs have emerged in recent months that their concerns are justified: ➡️ AI helped US scientists create 16 brand-new, fully functional synthetic viruses, while Anthropic warned of a growing push by overseas labs to use AI in controversial gain-of-function research ➡️ In July, an OpenAI test model broke out and autonomously hacked external systems, including tech startup Hugging Face’s servers. Just two months earlier, rogue AI agents had uploaded hundreds of malicious packages to software service RubyGems ➡️ AI systems are increasingly escaping users’ control – lying, ignoring instructions and pursuing harmful goals, according to a report released in late August by the Loss of Control Observatory ➡️ AI is increasingly being put to work identifying targets for air strikes, with Palantir AI tools and Israel’s Lavender, Gospel and Where’s Daddy systems facing growing scrutiny over their role in rising civilian casualties in Iran and Gaza Big tech floats safeguards without giving up the AI arms race 🔴 Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Google DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis and xAI owner Elon Musk have agreed "to pace the frontier". 🔴 In his recent essay, Amodei proposed a three-point plan to keep the AI gene in the bottle via independent monitoring of AI models, industry-wide regulation and global regulation. Skeptics, however, argue that big tech is unlikely to slow down as it could mean profit losses. 🔴 The person who is completely against "pacing the frontier" is Trump. In a series of angry posts, he dismissed AI fears as a "hoax" and "sick conspiracy" and insisted that outpacing China and preserving the AI boom is a priority. He even called Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang while he was on stage at a Los Angeles conference to say that “the robots will not be taking over.” AI boom is key to Trump's power 🌏 There is a simple reason for Trump’s highly emotional reaction to the AI debate: his economic agenda is heavily dependent on the AI boom. 🌏 With the US facing soaring consumer prices, persistent inflation and $40 trillion in debt, Team Trump argues that the country can "grow its way out" of these problems. AI has become a major driver of that growth. 🌏 US economists warned last year that over-reliance on AI investment could prove dangerous: if the boom turns to bust, it could drag the broader US economy down with it. 🌏 If the AI boom falters, Trump could face a sharply weakening economy, undermining his military operations and broader agenda. That may help explain why he is willing to allow AI to run unchecked and unleash dangers far beyond economic ones. 👍 Substack | Chat | @geopolitics_prime
