Introducing Trending

·3 min read

A free public board of the topics spiking across the Telegram channels we track, grouped into stories, ranked separately for each language and refreshed every hour.

Statiko could already tell you which channels exist, and what any one of them posted. It couldn't tell you what Telegram as a whole was talking about today.

Trending does. It's live now, it's free, and it works without an account.

TL;DR

  • Ranked stories instead of a list of keywords, each with a headline, a line of context and the keywords it was built from
  • Two windows, Today and Yesterday, each covering a rolling 24 hours in your timezone
  • A separate board for every language, showing only the languages with something trending
  • Four numbers on every row: channels, posts, direction and change
  • Ten stories in full, up to a hundred behind one button
  • Free and public, with no account and nothing gated

How stories are grouped

A list of trending hashtags leaves you with work to do. You see #запоріжжя, #град and #обстріл, and you still have to work out what happened.

Trending groups related topics into a single story and gives it a headline and a line of context. The keywords behind it sit underneath as chips, so you can check what the story was built from.

A board for each language

Trends are ranked per language, and the chips at the top of the page switch between boards rather than filtering one global list. What leads in Ukrainian in the morning usually has nothing to do with what leads in Farsi or Spanish.

Today and yesterday

Today covers the last 24 hours. Yesterday covers the 24 before that, which is useful for checking whether something is a real story or an hour of noise.

What puts a story on the board

Ranking is based on how many separate channels picked a topic up, not on how many posts it produced. One account posting the same thing two hundred times counts once, so a single busy source can't push a topic onto the board on its own.

What's next

The next thing we're building is the drilldown: clicking a story to see which channels drove it and what they posted. Rows aren't clickable yet for that reason. After that come history, alerts for topics you follow, and exports.

If a story looks mis-grouped, a headline reads oddly, or a language you use is missing, tell us.
